The basics about chess - pieces

From left to right: pawn, rook, knight, bishop, queen, and king

Pawns are the weakest pieces in the game of chess, you can move 1 space forward but except the first movement of it, you can move 2 spaces forward. On the picture, the white dots and the black dots are the movements of pawns, but they can't jump over pieces.

A pawn captures diagonally, one square forward and to the left or right. In the picture, the white pawn can capture the knight and the rook, but not the bishop.

Rooks are very powerful that they can move very far, and it can check the opponent's king easily. It's easy to do perpetual check and at least have a draw when you are losing.

Knights are the best pieces for you to dig some holes or break into someone's position, because they move so differently than others.

Bishop is also a powerful piece in the game, the movements of it is long, wide, and hard to defend.

This one, the queen, is the most powerful piece and you only have 1 during each game.

Last one, the king, is the weakest piece but the game depends all on the king. You better not have your king been knocked off because that means you just lost the game.
